Week 1 : HCI and DESIGN

Hi iam xiaoyu zhou. this is my week1-week2 works.

what is HCI?

HCI full name is Human Computer Initiative.

Short for human-computer Interaction, a discipline concerned with the study, design, construction and implementation of human-centric interactive computer systems. A user interface, such as a GUI, is how a human interacts with a computer, and HCI goes beyond designing screens and menus that are easier to use and studies the reasoning behind building specific functionality into computers and the long-term effects that systems will have on humans.

HCI is a very broad discipline that encompasses different specialties with different concerns regarding computer development: computer science is concerned with the application design and engineering of the human interfaces; sociology and anthropology are concerned with the interactions between technology, work and organization and the way that human systems and technical systems mutually adapt to each other; ergonomics is concerned with the safety of computer systems and the safe limits of human cognition and sensation; psychology is concerned with the cognitive processes of humans and the behavior of users; linguistics is concerned with the development of human and machine languages and the relationship between the two.

As computers become more and pervasive in culture, designers are increasingly looking for ways to make interfacing with devices easier, safer and more efficient.

what is Interaction design ?

Interaction design is "the practice of designing interactive digital products, environments, systems, and services." Like many other design fields Interaction Design also has an interest in form but its main focus is on behaviour.(form http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interaction_design)

Interaction design is heavily focused on satisfying the needs and desires of the people who will use the product. Where other disciplines like software engineering have a heavy focus on designing for technical stakeholders of a project.

Week 1 Human Computer Interaction

Hi, I'm Sieh Inn Tyan, normally my friends call me Jasmine. Well, now I'm going to post about what I have learn from the lecture class this week.

What is HCI?

• HCI - Human Computer Interaction.
• Human Computer Interaction is the study of how people interact with computers and to what extent computers are or are not developed for successful interaction with human beings.

HCI are all about Human and Computer.
Human <----------->Computer
There are quite a number of company and academic institute now study and doing research on HCI.

What is Interaction?

• A kind of action that occurs as two or more objects have an effect upon one another.
• The act or process of interacting.
• The state of undergoing interaction.

Above are the meaning of interaction that I can get online, so now how is a good interaction?
for me, a good interaction is just like anyone try to say something out to another person, and that message that he or she trying to say are understand by the other.
And now when someone wants to delivered some message to another person, but the person can't get what he or she trying to say, then that is a bad interaction.


The Chinese greatest inventions are paper making, compass, printing and gun powder........
Thomas Edison has invent light bulb , Motion picture ...........
Design is everywhere, and anything can be design.
Invent and Reinvent..

Why people keep inventing and reinventing? What is the purpose of that?
"Design is to making things better for people."
When design something, these are the thing we need to think about, who are going to use this, how is the appearance that can attract people to use this? and many many more, we are designing them for people..

Well, I feel quite interesting about this class, there are many things we can talk about and think about, we can have a lots of discussion in class, and the lecturer are very friendly, I like the slide also, not much words but can communicate with us ( good interaction). I'm looking forward to the next class.=)

Week 1- HCI and Interactive Design

What is exactly HCI? This had confuse me about 1 week. I just back from MI Field Trip - Kuala Selangor Nature Park, now only I started to research what exactly is HCI. I choose to google it.

Based on the result in Google and the week 2 Interaction Studies lecture class, I am confirm HCI = Human-Computer Interaction. Hahaha xD

Human-Computer Interaction is the study, planning, evaluation, implementation and design of how people interact with computers. Do not confuse, HCI are simply mean the interactive between human and computer through user interface, such as software and hardware. For example, the characters or objects displayed by software and shown in hardware such as monitor. The example of hardware are the mouse and keyboard which allow human to control and access computer, the monitor for human to view data, and other user interaction with large scale computerized systems such as spacecraft, cockpits, or microwave ovens. It allow human to interactive with others through computer and technology. Human nowadays are keep research on HCI. The goals of Human-Interaction research are to improve interaction between human and computer, and communication and cooperation between humans.

Interactive Design, is design for human use. It is the study of behaviour and structure of interactive system. Designers need to design meaningful relationship between the people and the product, and the service that they use. It appear on out daily life, such as coffee machine, cell phone, computer, ATM machine, photocopier machine and other product that allow human to interact with. Many product require interaction to complete certain task, thus we need a good interactive design to help human can easier, more effective, enjoy to complete certain task using the product.

A Good design is meant easy to learn, effective to use, and provide an enjoyable user experience. A Bad design is meant hard to learn, not effective to use, and always provide confusion and frustration to whom who use it.

Week 1 : HCI and DESIGN

Hi I am Yong Hooi Khim 1081100604 from Media Arts. In this post I am going to give my opinion and kinda explain about what is HCI (Human-Computer Interaction).

In this cyber-age, most of the time we are interacting more with the computer, so it is a must to at least understand about the HCI. 

First, HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) is the study,planning and design of the interaction between people (users) and computers. It is often regarded as the intersection of computer science, behavioral sciences, design and several other fields of study. - Wikipedia.

Simply said, HCI means the interaction become the human and the computer no matter who you are as long as you are using the computer, typing using the keyboard, clicking the mouse, touch screen and etc. 

In between this, involved one process which is interaction design that use to design how to make the user/ human to interact with the computer. The people will design variety of interaction to attract people attention and also make the user easy to interact with the computer. 

Interaction design (IxD) is "the practice of designing interactive digital products, environments, systems, and services."^[1] Like many other design fields Interaction Design also has an interest in form but its main focus is on behaviour.^[1] What clearly marks Interaction design as a design field as opposed to a science or engineering field is that it is synthesis and imagining things as they might be, more so than focusing on how things are.^{[2]  - wikipedia}


The importance of interaction design

One of the greatest challenges facing a software designer is understanding what a user requires from a product. 
To do this, the designer must have at least a basic understanding of mental models and other psychological theories and their application to software design. Since the user is interacting with the computer in order to accomplish something, the software interface is crucial to facilitating the users goals and tasks. 
The interface, which typically comprises nearly half of the lines of code of a software product (Milewski 2004), is where the designer must consider the implications of how the software influences and anticipates the users thought processes during their interaction.

Conclusion, HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) plays an important role in our life and Interaction design is one of the important thing to support it.

Week 1 : HCI and DESIGN

HCI also known as Human Computer Interaction is a study of study of the interaction between human and the computer. Even though this study is about the interaction between human and machine (computer) but in the end it is all about human itself. The purpose of this interaction is to invent and reinvent something. In order t solve the problem faced, human used their intelligent to invent something. Computer is one of the examples. Computer is not only about the screen and the CPU we used but it also can be other item that can store information, analyze it and display it in a specific manner. One invention cannot be applied forever. It needs to be reinvented and improve according to the need of people of that era. This make HCI become a cycle for the purpose of invent and reinvent something that is existed.

Design is for the purpose in making thing better for people. People become the main target in the process of design. Design is everywhere. As a designer, we need to design something that vary than other products that designed by other designer. Before design something, we need to aware the relationship between design and other factor such as relation between design and user. As mention before, design is aim for group of people, so we need to pay attention to the target audience that will use our design. Design also relate to creativity. Design need to be creative and vary than the usual design yet functional. Design also relate to business where the production cost need to be the minimum but the function is maximum. These relations are very important to guiding more sustainable product use.
