week 5 Graphic Design

what is graphic design?

Graphic design is a creative process – most often involving a client and a designer and usually completed in conjunction with producers of form (i.e., printers, programmers, signmakers, etc.) – undertaken in order to convey a specific message (or messages) to a targeted audience.

History of graphic design

Tunc dicit illisWhile Graphic Design as a discipline has a relatively recent history, with the name 'graphic design" first coined by William Addison Dwiggins in 1922,graphic design-like activities span the history of humankind: from the caves of Lascaux, to Rome's Trajan's Column to the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, to the dazzling neons of Ginza. In both this lengthy history and in the relatively recent explosion of visual communication in the 20th and 21st centuries, there is sometimes a blurring distinction and over-lapping of advertising art, graphic design and fine art. After all, they share many of the same elements, theories, principles, practices and languages, and sometimes the same benefactor or client. In advertising art the ultimate objective is the sale of goods and services. In graphic design, "the essence is to give order to information, form to ideas, expression and feeling to artifacts that document human experience."

What a Graphic designer actually does?

A graphic designer acts as a bridge between the client and the audience. His aim is to convey the message to the audience in an attractive way, which should have a good response as well. Through his work a graphical designer should sell or tempt the audience to buy the product on behalf of their clients.

Graphical designers use the images which are drawn, painted, photographed or computer-generated. They also use various fonts and styles to make the graphic design, an eye-catching one. Graphics, which are either created or selected, should be arranged in a proper way. In simple words the text, images and other graphical elements should capture the attraction of the audience. Moreover it should be simple to understand so that the message could be easily conveyed.

The role of graphic designs in our day-today life is vast. Ranging from mere candy wrappers to the advertisement boards carrying the picture of the jewels, automobiles etc. the role of graphical designs has become inevitable. Graphical designs can be commonly seen in the title of the films, in various kinds of advertisements, in magazines, books etc.

Types of Graphic Design

Graphic design is a field where you have to use your creativity along with latest technologies to make the mode of communication an effective one. The designer uses a wide variety of communication tools in order to convey a message on behalf of client to particular audience. The main tools are typography and image.

Image-Based Design

Designers will either use created or photographed images to communicate the messages, which their clients want to convey. Images are effective tools of communication, which can express even the emotions and moods. When compared to words, people respond quickly to images. For example, we all know that a candy is hot, and when an image in combination with this knowledge creates a visual mesmerism. In an image-based design, the pictures will convey the entire message. Sometimes a few words are used in addition to the picture. A graphic designer chooses an image-based design only when he feels that an image is thousand times better than a word.

Type-Based Design

Type based designs are nothing but using words in an attractive way to convey a message instead of using pictures. Just like the meaning of a text, how the words look like is also important for a graphic designer. A designer uses different typescripts, type size, colors, borders, shadings, columns, margins, spacing etc to make the text unique and attractive.

Image and Type

When the designers combine both text and images to convey the message to the audience, it is known as image and type design. The words and image should be creative and catchy respectively. After the design concept has been finalized, the designers work with photographers, illustrators, typesetters and other production technicians to get the final output as desired by their clients.

Symbols, Logos and Logotypes

Just like the pictures, symbols and logos also have the potential to quickly reach the audience. It helps to represent a particular concept or company. Logos and logotypes reveal that the product belongs to a particular company.

Process of Creating Graphic Art

The theme behind graphic design is to convey a message. Therefore the designer and the client will discuss what kind of message is to be conveyed and which way will be effective in reaching the targeted audience.

The use of various design elements will be based on the medium through which they are going to advertise. Only the artistic side of the graphic design is the designer’s job. Rest will be based on the size of the business and the budget of the client.

Currently there are many online graphic design degree programs to enroll in. These are taken online so you can develop your skills without attending a campus college.
